Great Weekend!

Lily pushing Chloe in the car

Chloe giving Molly the juice box

What is cooler than drinking juice together!!

We had a nice relaxing weekend. On Monday, we packed the family up and ventured to Main Street (about 1 mile away) to see the Memorial Day Parade. Wyatt sat like a big boy in the stroller (not in the infant car seat) so he could see it all. We ran into our friends Amy and Jobe who are parent's of Lily and Molly and so we had an impromptu cookout. It was a lot of fun and Wyatt's first time at a party! He decided to sleep most of the time though. Chloe had a great time playing with her old pals... Molly and Lily. Lori was Molly, Lily, and Chloe's nanny before she moved far, far, far away.

Wyatt is overall generally happy. At times he will turn to the side in pain and it takes a little while to settle him down. This happens in the mornings and nights mostly. Infants and Toddlers came by to work on Wyatt today and Wyatt did fantastic! Wyatt loves to put his bib in his mouth and suck on his fingers. Wyatt is also starting to talk more often and he loves to stick out his tongue at me and grab my nose and hair (is this what boys do??) He was weighed today and now is 15 lbs 8 oz.We now have a new night nurse who is very sweet and gentle towards Wyatt and we are very happy!!!

Also, congratulations to Drew for getting no more TPN!! This is a HUGE success and we are so happy for him. Congratulations to Sofia for going home tomorrow, and congratulations for Skyla for making a complete turn around and thriving!! We love to hear great news. Our upcoming appointments next week include ENT, GI, and Neurosurg. I am hoping to wean Wyatt from some of his meds which is our next goal. By the way, Wyatt is stating 99-100 percent on 1/4 liter of oxygen which is a huge improvement since he caught his cold. It's not bad for having part of the intestines in the chest. Maybe they fell back down, whatever goes up, must come down... we can only be hopeful.

Saturday

Wyatt had a nice day with his Daddy while Chloe and I visited Mom-mom, pop-pop, Great grandmom, Aunt Danielle and Uncle Gino! Later in the day Wyatt and Chloe played outside for a few hours and everyone got to go to bed late tonight!! Wyatt is occasionally uncomfortable and I feel bad for him when he is... but it is always a good feeling to see him smile and have a good time!! Chloe had a nice playdate with her friends, Hailey, Taylor, and Joey (my friend Teaette's kids). Otherwise... nothing too exciting going on. I have to remind myself to charge my camera batteries because I am missing so many good photo opportunities!!

A better day!

Wyatt had a great day today!!! He was back to his old self... flirting with our nurse and enjoying the day. He is now up to his goal of 40ml/hr and seems to be tolerating it. Otherwise... no new news to report which is a good thing!

Wednesday Update

Just when we found out that Wyatt may have reherniated, he is now showing some symptoms. Such as spitting up brown blood, turning to his side and crying in pain, and spitting up more often. The symptoms come and go with periods of happiness in between. I hate to see he like that and just want to get him all fixed up so he can just heal from everything... but I know it's good to wait as long as he can stand it so that he can grow and gain weight. If his symptoms get worse, I will have to talk to the surgeon about next steps.

We increased his feeds to 40ml which is his goal. It's only one more ml, so hopefully it won't be a big deal and he will tolerate it. We also took him for a nice walk today and he enjoyed looking around! His central line site looks good. We wipe it with sterile water and apply antibiotic cream to it since it was growing bacteria. I hope this prevents an infection. Wyatt was also weighed and he is now 15 lb 2 oz!! I am so happy we reached the 15 lb mark!! I think it's almost healed, so that's great news! That's all for today! Thanks to my sister and father for spending the day with Wyatt and Chloe! I know they were tired at the end of the day and we really appreciate it!

Bummed out...

Today we had a busy day. We had a surgically appointment with Wyatt's surgeon this morning and then an appointment with his pediatrician. Dr. A looked at Wyatt's chest x-ray and seemed concern. It looks like there is a small part of his bowel in his chest! Yes... it seems like Wyatt re-herniated again for the third time. Just when I was so happy about finally turning the corner, no more operations, no central line, we get this news:(( Wyatt needs a break!!! Well, Dr. A does not want to be too aggressive about it. Wyatt is not showing big signs of re-herniation so he would like to wait and have Wyatt grow and get stronger. Who knows, while we are waiting, maybe the bowel will slide back down to it's correct spot, or maybe the x-ray just wasn't clear?? Wyatt will get another x-ray in about a month and we will return to see Dr. A in early July. Meanwhile, Wyatt's surgeon is going to meet with the surgical team and come up with a plan. IF Wyatt did reherniate, there is a possibility that he will not be repaired with a Gortex patch, but rather a piece of muscle from another place in his body such as his back. I just want our little baby to get a break!!! Benji reminded me that this is a marathon and not a sprint... that Wyatt is a winner with everything that he has endured, the head bleed, vocal cord Persis, two reherniations, etc... that he is doing GREAT!! Just pray that our next chest x-ray shows a normal chest!!!

Wyatt also received four shots today and he is finally up to date on his immunizations. He was a champ during the shots. On Saturday in the ER, a culture was taken of the central line site. Our pediatrician today looked up the results and it is growing bacteria!! We just have to keep the site very clean since it's an open wound... but thank goodness we made the decision to go to the ER on Saturday to have it removed. Please pray for Wyatt to remain healthy and for those intestines to go back where they belong!!

On a happy note, Chloe spent joined us today to Wyatt's appointments and she was so good! As a special treat we all went to Fuddrukers for lunch. It was our very first family outing with the two kids and Wyatt's first place in public besides a dr. appt. Wyatt decided to sleep, but Chloe enjoyed it!

On another happy note, Baby Ned is home!!! Congratulations to Baby Ned and his family... we are so happy for you! Baby Sofia should be coming home this weekend!! yeah!!

By the way, the University of Michagen has a great website on CDH. It even has a video of a real CDH repair. It's about 5 minutes to watch and it's really cool!!

A trip to the ER

We thought today would be a nice and relaxing Saturday... it all started when Chloe and I went to Lowes to buy vegetables for our garden. We were planning on planting our vegetable garden today, but Wyatt wanted to do something different! Wyatt seems to be the boss, so we followed him all the way to the Pediatric ER at Hopkins.
On Wednesday I noticed that his central line dressing was wet inside and it looked the line was oozing yellowish stuff, so I changed the dressing since the infusion nurse was not coming until Saturday. Today, the nurse noticed more ooze and we she pressed on it, more came out and the site around the line was red. A stitch fell out too. So I decided to call the pediatric surgeon on call and he gave us a choice to come in today or wait until our appointment on Tuesday. I really wanted to wait until Tuesday, but I would not know what I would do with myself if the line got infected from now until Tuesday. So I took Wyatt (all by myself, for the first time) to the ER at Hopkins. The ER was super slow, so we did not have to wait long. We got there around 3pm and left at 7pm. The central line dressing was removed and we even got a chest x-ray so we do not have to get one on Tuesday!!! The ER was getting busy, so the doctor did not give me the results of the x-ray. According to the nurse, it's the same as the one two weeks ago??? I am glad I have an appointment with Dr. Abudallah on Tuesday so I can find out more about the x-ray. Overall, the day wasn't too bad. I got to spend one-on-one time with Wyatt today and I was so worried about the central line and now it's out!!! That line was our insurance policy in case he had to return to the hospital. Please pray for no more hospitalizations!!!

On a happy note, Baby Ned went home today!!!! He has been in the hospital since Jan., so we are thrilled for him. Congratulations baby Ned!!

Also, another baby was born with CDH in our town and we discovered it through by Wyatt's article. Baby Grace was born 6 month's ago at our local hospital and was repaired. She is doing great! Her mom e-mailed me because she read about Wyatt in the paper. It's a small world:))

Friday Update

I don't want to jinx myself...but it seems like Wyatt is finally turning the corner. When we came home from Mt. Wash, Wyatt reherniated, was spitting up often and was uncomfortable. After his repair on April 17th, it took a while for him to recover. He was in pain, on oxycodone and developed a cold with a lot of chest congestion. I finally sense that he is feeling good! Wyatt is generally a happy baby- he discovered his feet and loves to grab them and kick his "Itsy Bitsy Spiders" He rarely spits up and is gaining weight. I think I might get the exersaucer out from our basement and see how he likes it! During out peditrician appointment last Monday, Wyatt weighed 14lb 10oz. Since then, we have been increasing his feeds. He is currently up to 39 ml/hr and 40ml is our goal and so far he is tolerating the increase. I think on Saturday night we might achieve the goal! The infusion nurse is coming tomorrow to change his central line dressing. I am hoping we can remove it soon, because it is red and either has puss or some liquid is getting into the dressing- which is not good. It didn't look so good on Wednesday, so I changed it. I get a little nervous about changing it, because you need everything to be sterile (it's called a sterile field). On Tuesday morning Wyatt is getting a chest x-ray at Hopkins and then we have a follow up appointment with his surgeons. I am hoping to get the central line out then!! Then we have an appointment with his peditrician for his shots:(( It's going to be a busy Tuesday!!

If you want proof that there is a God, just read Baby Sklya's update! She looks amazing and she is a true miracle. She has made tremendous progress since Monday and we are so happy for her and her family. Keep praying for her!!!

Also, my friend Vicki (Jack's Mom) co-worker delivered a baby- Baby Andrew with CDH in February and I just discovered his blog. It's a heart-felt story of a tough little boy and worth reading about.

A Message from Joe...

Hey all, Joe here,

I just wanted to let everyone know about the success we had on Saturday night. We raised $4625.00 towards Wyatt's expenses and the hospitals that treated him. We had 125 people attend the concert. The silent auction brought in a little over $1000.00. We sold $400.00 in 50/50s and the winner donated the money back to the foundation. The money wheel took in $100.00.

If anyone is still interested in making a donation they can do so in a number of ways. The eVite we set up (http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?inviteId=TLRNAWVVFWBCHSQUBCEO) will be online until June 10th. There is a link on the that site to donate with your paypal account. If you have a paypal account you can send a donation directly to the email address friendsofwyatt@gmail.com.

By mail you can send a check made out to Friends of Wyatt to:
Friends of Wyatt
592 Jermor Lane #109
Westminster MD 21157

I can't thank enough Maria Carr, Alex and Jessica Bair for everything they did to help pull this off. I also want to thank again the bands for donating their time and talents to the cause. The small army of friends, family and coworkers, that helped us advertise, get silent auction items, set up, run the concert and clean up deserve a massive thank you.

Joe

I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our community, friends, family, co-workers, and complete strangers. The Friends of Wyatt Benefit was truly a humbling experience and probably the most meaningful event I ever experienced. Wyatt is a superhero... he unites people from around the world and helps them do superhero acts like organizing this event....and also leading our ex-nanny to her new career (read Lori's blog for more info). It has taken me several days to write this post, because I just don't know where to begin. I heard that the idea of the benefit started on New Years Eve in casual conversation and what did that conversation create??.... the most spectacular night ever!!! This event would not occur if it wasn't for the organizers, Joe Carr, Maria Carr, and Jessica Bair. Wonderful people that I met working at New Windsor Middle School. We moved to this town seven years ago. I knew NO ONE!!! After this event, I realized this is a town where I am proud to raise my children, work, and live. It is truly the most caring community. It all started when we purchased a grill six years ago at Lowes and it would not fit into our car, a kind stranger offered to take it to our house, then shortly after that we purchased a small freezer at Wal Mart and it would not fit in our car (we purchased a truck after this!), so a strange man GAVE US HIS KEYS to his truck and we took it home and returned his truck to the Wal Mart parking lot!!! Is that trusting or what!! Then, my friend Kelly organized a local 5k Race for the Cure for Breast Cancer a few years ago, and our tiny little faculty at New Windsor gave us $800 for the cause!!! Then Wyatt's benefit.... after all my experiences in 7 short years, I KNOW this is a great place to live, work, and play!!!

The night started when I drove up to the VFW at 5:30pm to help set up. When I walked in, I was overwhelmed the the number of people helping to set up. I teared up instantly. Everyone was working so hard to make the place turn into a magical place. My friends, their husbands, and people I have not seen in the longest time were setting up tables, blowing up balloons, and working so hard to the last minute before the crowd arrived.

The crowd started to pile into the hall at 8pm... I am not sure how many people (Joe is counting), but it was packed... all the tables and chairs were full. It seemed like a wedding or roast... the crowd consisted on high school friends, college friends, co-workers from Harford County, co-workers from Carroll County, neighbors, family (cousins, aunts, grandmom, parents), best friends, and complete strangers. Everyone important in our lives life were there.

Everyone had such a giving spirit. The silent auction was more than we ever imagined thanks to Jessica. We had some fantastic items such as a year membership to the YMCA, handcrafted clock, homemade quilt, New Vera Bradley Tote, The Color Purple Tickets, Creative Memory items, baked goods, Bags from around the World, gift certificates, sports memorabilia, hand-crafted chair, HUGE Party-lite candle, wine, wine glasses, and so much more!!! Everyone was so generous in their bidding!!!

The 50/50 raffle drew in $400 and Elizabeth Kenny won the raffle and donated back to the Friends of Wyatt Foundation. What a wonderful, giving person! Elizabeth could of really used the money herself, but decided to donate in honor of Wyatt.

The Money Wheel was great fun with Whitney Rohde as "Vanna White" spinning the wheel ever so gracefully!!

The bands were great!! Special thanks to Eternal Buzz for donating their time to play at their event. They normally get paid BIG bucks to play out in Baltimore, but donated many hours to our event. Chris did a great job DJ'ing as well! Thanks to Muggsy Thuggo and Time Alone. Maria has such a fantastic voice, Joe rocked on the guitar, Muggsy Thuggo was great!!! especially my hubby on the bass!

People danced the night away, especially my neighbors Ligia, Kathy, and Jessica!! They are an inspiration to us all!

An important part of the night was to raise CDH awareness. CDH occurs one in every 2,500 births. A slide show of Wyatt along with facts about CDH and hyrdocelphus. A tri-fold board and brochures from the Breath of Hope along with turquoise ribbons were also part of the CDH education.

Additional thanks goes towards Barb Bankard for being the banker, Pam Hayes for helping to set up and clean up, the Tontalla's, Ed and Lisa Macurak, Melissa, Joe, Maria, Jessica, Alex, and so many more that I am not mentioning and will think of after I post this!!! It was an overwhelming, special night for Benji and I. Wyatt will hear all about it when he is older, look at all the pictures, and know that he is a survivor because of YOU!!!!!!!

I heard that the money that was raised was double of what the organizers thought. Joe is doing the final count and he will let us know soon. The money raised will be donated to Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, and Wyatt's expenses. Thank you.

Finally, thank you for everything. This blog has taken a life on it's own. When I first started it during Christmas Week, I was not planning on sharing it with the world... but I decided to and because of it, the blog has almost 17,000 hits since Christmas (about 100 hits a day) from around the world- Canada, Africa, Italy, Japan, Austrailia, and through out the United States (MN, WA, CA, SC, NC, KY, TX, etc...) It's amazing of all the people I met in cyber space that pray and care for Wyatt and all the other babies I met along the way that give me hope for Wyatt that survived CDH. Thank you world!! It really is a good place!

Life lesson- this event arose from an idea that someone had and made it into real life... so all the ideas that you have if you think they are silly or not... make them REAL!! Follow your heart and good things will come from it.

What a Success!!

It's Danielle. The benefit was hugely successful for CDH and a great time as well. The first pic is the opening band. Wyatt's daddy is showcased on the right. The second picture is Wyatt's slideshow. Gina said some beautiful words, something to the effect of that she wouldn't wish this birth defect on anyone, but she would never take back this experience because of the person Wyatt is becoming and the support that radiates from everyone around her. The crew that put the benefit on really knows how to through a party!!

Busy Day!!

Today was a really nice and busy day with just myself and the kids!... and I am worn out!!! You really are busy all day long playing and tending to their needs with a 21 month old and a 6 month old!! We had a few visitors today and took a long walk on this beautiful day! Pat, the media specialist brought me lunch today (thank you Pat!) and stayed to help put the kids down for a nap. Wyatt was a good boy and took a nap and Chloe decided not too... but later she did! A couple hours later, my friend Jessica and her daughter Alexi came by to visit. Alexi was such a great helper and played with Chloe the entire time. Chloe really enjoyed it and we are looking forward to her visiting us again! Wyatt's feeds were increased from 35 ml to 37mls so that he will gain more weight. So far he is tolerating it. Our goal in three days is 40 mls per hour. Go Wyatt Go!!

By the way... you HAVE to read baby Skyla's blog... she needs your prayers more than EVER!!! She was born with CDH around the same time as Wyatt and the doctors told her mom that they don't think she is going to make it... well she is fighting hard and is still with us....I think she will make it... so please pray for her.

The count down is on!!

The count down is on to Wyatt's Benefit! I am excited because we will finally get to thank everyone for all their support publicly and it's going to be a fun night with family and friends to celebrate!!! My goal is to create awareness about CDH since it occurs one in every 2,500 births. The Carroll County Times reporter and photographer came by today to write a story on Wyatt. It will probably be published on Friday. Don't worry... I will have plenty of extra copies of the paper to share and I will have a link to the article on the blog. I was just nervous because I forgot what I said and I hope I covered everything. I gave the reporter a bunch of hand-outs on CDH in case I forgot something. Wyatt was such a ham during his photography session... he was smiling and rolling towards the camera!!

Wyatt is doing much better. He actually went from 1/2 liter to 1/4 liter during waking hours which is a huge improvement from 1 liter. Now Chloe and I have a cold!!! If it's not one thing, it's something else!!!! Otherwise it's quiet on the home front. I am busy working and Wyatt is really enjoying/flirting with his two day nurses Kathy and Susan:)))

Go Wyatt Go!

Wyatt's cold seems to be getting a little better, but now I feel like I am getting a cold!! The support for Wyatt's Benefit has been awesome!! It was advertised in the St. John's Bulletin in church, it's on the marquee at a vet's office on route 140 (across from McDonald's), and a reporter and photographer from the Carroll County Times is coming by today to interview Wyatt! Thank you everyone for getting the word out there! It's going to be a fun night... tickets will be sold at the door as well through mail... it's not too late to get your ticket!! The more the merrier to celebrate Wyatt.

On a side note- baby Skyla needs many prayers... she is Wyatt's age and was born with CDH. She weighs 9 lbs and is still in the hospital in Australia. She just got a trach and has pneumonia. Check out her blog for all the details- http://skylacdhbaby.blogspot.com/

Busy Day Yesterday!

If you click on the link above, you can view more pictures.

Our friends who are the organizers of the benefit came over to visit Wyatt and Chloe yesterday and brought their two kids Dan and Grace. It was so much fun hanging out with them. Wyatt really enjoyed spending time with Dan and Chloe enjoyed spending time with Grace. We did run out of oxygen, so our equipment company delivered liquid oxygen which is suppose to last 16 days on one liter plus many portable tanks. It looks like your prayers are working... Wyatt moved down from 1 liter to 1/2 liter today and his stats are great! The congestion is still there, but I am really hoping it's getting better. I also think increasing the Prevacid to 3.5 mls from 2.5 mls is working- so far, no brown spit up. Wyatt also had the infusion nurse come by yesterday to change his central line dressing. I can't wait to have it taken out because the risk of infection, but we are keeping it in until Wyatt is over his cold. The nurse also said that Wyatt's other incisions look great! Go Wyatt Go! Everyone is napping now, but when they wake up, I think we might go for a walk. Happy Sunday!

Go Away Congestion!!

Benji's grandfather passed away. He lived a good long life and he is now happy in heaven. Benji flew to Texas this past Tuesday and will be arriving home today. Gosh do I miss him and realize what a huge help he is at home. Putting two kids to bed on two different floors and attending to both of their needs while working is very hard and tiring!! But I did it with help from others!! My friend Whitney spent the night the past two nights to help (thank you Whitney!!) and the nurses were a huge help. Wyatt still is very congested, in fact overnight and this morning, he requires 1 liter of oxygen. We are running very low on oxygen and we are trying to conserve until Monday when the delivery comes. We hope we can make it!! We are on our reserve tanks now!! Yesterday, Dr. Colobamni looked at Wyatt's chest x-ray and ordered Zantac for him because he had another brown spit up that looks like chocolate milk!! However, our GI docotor talked to the GPS team and said that he is currently on Prevacid. Zantac and Prevacid do not mix too well, so Dr. G called me and said to just increase the dose of Prevacid. (I love our doctors!!) Dr. C also ordered another chest x-ray in 2 weeks. I just want all this congestion to go away!!

On a side note, the benefit is fast approaching. It's this Saturday May 10th and we need help advertising because we still have remaining tickets to sell. It's going to be a lot of fun with bands and a DJ and drinks will be a plenty!! You may even recognize some of the band members!! I sent out an e-mail with a flyer attached. If you did not receive the e-mail and would like to have it, just let me know. If you like and live nearby, you can post the flyer around town, in your work place, or your neighbor's newspaper boxes. The proceeds from the benefit will go towards Hopkins, Mt. Wash, and Wyatt's expenses. Join us to celebrate Wyatt's success and help spread CDH awareness.

Wyatt is in love with our new day nurses!

Nothing new to report.. I think Wyatt is feeling a little bit better but he is still congested and wakes himself up when he coughs. I have been suctioning him more often and give him Xopernex to help with breathing. He also gets chest PT every four hours or when needed. I just feel bad for him, because I know he is uncomfortable. However, Wyatt is such a flirt and observes everything that you do. He is enjoying spending time with his two new day nurses. They are great to him and they are like a second mom. He sticks out his tongue and smiles, kicks his legs at them!! Wyatt is in love!!

Other Blogs to check out!

UPDATE- I just got off the phone with Wyatt's pulmonalogist and he compared yesterday's chest x-ray to the x-ray he had on April 19th after his surgery. Even though Wyatt does not sound too good, it's actually improved!! He did not reherniate (yeah!) and he has less fluid and his left lung is not as collasped. He still has a collasped left lung and fluid, but it seems to be improving. Go Wyatt Go!! Check out Jack's blog... it looks like both boys want to do similar activities, like going to get chest x-rays on the same day!!

Just as a side note... This as nothing to do with Wyatt's progress, but I added two new blogs in the other "other blog" section. Both bloggers are friends of mine and wonderful supporters of Wyatt. Amy and Kelly have amazing families and found the perfect balance in their life. It's fun to read their blog, so check them out-
Amy's Blog- (Amy is a teacher and a very talented crafter!! as well as a mom to Ryan and a wife. I worked with Amy at North Harford Middle). Kelly is my co-worker and is a computer whiz! Plus she is a mom of two boys.)

Amy's blog-
Kelly's blog-

If you have a blog you like me to add, please let me know! My sister added new pics of her trip to Laos! Check out her blog too!

In the meanwhile, Wyatt is still congested... I just want it to go away!!!
