Happy Camper

Today I was able to spend a long time with Wyatt at the hospital. Since Chloe was sick, I only saw him for 2 hours this week until today. He had plenty of visitors in my abensce since I could not go. Thank you to my cousins Laura and Christine for spending a long time with him yesterday. Thank you to all the nurses that hold and cuddle him. I heard last night was spa night for him. Three nurses gave him a bath and lotioned him up. Wyatt gets plenty of attention on the 6th floor and we really like our spot there. Tonight Wyatt's nurse was our neighbor Heather, so I know he got ALOT of attention tonight. She's the best!!! The reflux study yesterday showed that he did reflux (surprise!!) however, he did not aspirate which is a great thing!! Wyatt is currently on reflux medication to help decrease the refluxing. Over the weekend he will get a CT scan of his head and Dr. Carson will read it and see him on Monday. Also on Monday, Wyatt will get a swallow study done to check for aspiration. Our next steps will depend on the swallow study. The possibilites will be going back to Mt. Wash or coming home and a nurse will be with him at night while we sleep (best case senerio!!). Wyatt is currently in the IMC section on the 6th floor where there is a nurse by Wyatt's bedside. The charge nurse was talking about moving him to a room without a nurse tomorrow. I am not comfortable with him being in a room without a nurse for two reasons. Wyatt can not be heard when he cries, so how will a nurse know to come in his room to soothe him. More importantly, Wyatt may aspirate by pulling his ng tube or choking on vomit (which is the reason why he can not come home). If a nurse waits until the monitors go off, it may be too late. I would much rather him home with us or even at Mt. Wash if this is the case. I asked the nurse to call me before he is moved. We will see.... otherwise, Wyatt is happy and gets plenty of attention on the 6th floor. We are very happy!!! I would even be happy if he stays put in spot #5 until he comes home!!

Vicki Jensen said...: They're mentioning the "H" word!!! That would be so awesome if Wyatt can come home with you. If you guys could have a nurse at night that would really ease your mind too! I'll pray like crazy that it all happens that way! I'll be thinking of you Monday for the swallow study. He's a bigger boy now - stronger - so I hope he has a good result and they say it's safe for him to go home with an NG tube. We were scared of the NG tube at first but now it's not a big deal at all. I'm so glad Wyatt is doing so great and getting spoiled like he deserves!!
We'll be at Hopkins on Tuesday (in the surgery clinic). If the weather is nice I'll take Jack over to see you guys in the hospital. I think our appt is in the morning so let me know if you'll be around.

Hope Chloe is continuing to improve too!

Hurdles that I faced and achieved!

After birth, I was placed on ECMO at Johns Hopkins Hospital for 13 days. On day 13, I had a surgery to repair my hernia and was removed from ECMO, but my organs would not fit in my abdomen. I had a silo for a week and then surgery to place the organs back in the abdomen. Then, part of my intestines re-herniated into my chest cavity two months later and I had another surgery to repair that. After my first surgery, I experienced an intraventricular hemorrhage in my brain and at four months old I received a VP shunt. After I was extubated, I learned that I have right vocal cord paralysis. Then I had g-tube surgery and after I finally got to go home after 5 longs months at Johns Hopkins and Mt. Washington Hospital! Only for a few weeks, though. In mid-April my intestines reherniated again and sent me into surgery. I came home, and had a long run before my THIRD reherniation in the beginning of September on Labor Day weekend in 2008. Then I was hospitalized for twice during the winter 2009 for two respiratory infections. Well, I almost lasted a year until my next surgery! Just this past June, in 2009, I had surgery to wrap my stomach around the esophagus, a nissen. This has helped with my reflux and my hiatal hernia. I will be 2 in October, I love scooting around but refuse to stand up and walk. I am a little miracle and thank God, my doctors, my nurses, family, and friends for my strength, my fight and a happy life.
