Surgery Day

Calling all prayer warriors!  Wyatt began surgery at 7:30am and it’s planned for 8 hours. I was told that it’s a major surgery. It’s a very complex case because of the severe scoliosis curve and his diaphragm reherniatation surgeries.  When I walked in this morning, the anesthesiologist was talking to Dr. Kay’s in Florida at All Children’s who did his reherniation surgery in 2021.  There is a risk of reherniation because the repair was done on the left side and the curve is in the left side and his body will be stretched.  Wyatt may have some temporary nerve damage too because of all the moving and stretching. He already has tingling in his right arm and two fingers from the halo and since his esophagus will be getting moved, there will be a period of adjustment.  Also, his surgeon shared there is a probability that he may need two surgeries.  Wyatt is a complex case but nothing that he hasn’t handled before!

His spirits were high this morning.  Wyatt is such a great advocate for himself.  He asks great questions to the medical team and makes recommendations.  He requested his IV get put in two days ago so the blood draws from the last two days and anesthesia medication can go through that.  So rather than getting sticked with a needle several times, it was just one stick.  He’s a hard stick too!  It takes an ultrasound machine to find his vein.  I am proud and impressed by his medical knowledge, how he advocates for himself and the conversations he carries with the medical team.  Actually I’m in awe ❤️❤️

Last night Wyatt ordered Chinese food (his favorite). This morning he seemed relaxed.  We are ready for this and hope all goes well and smoothly.

Night before surgery

Morning of surgery

Pop Pop is still doing great!  He is in the adult side, about a 5 minute walk from Wyatt so I have been going back and forth.
